Madonna Is Directing & Co-Writing Her Own Biopic

Madonna is the latest music icon to bring her life story to the silver screen.

It’s been confirmed that the “Material Girl” singer will write and self-direct her own biopic for Universal Pictures. Diablo Cody (Juno) will co-write the motion picture chronicling the superstar’s rise to stardom, with Amy Pascal (Little Women, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) attached to produce.

“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer—a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” Madonna said in a statement, per Variety. “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”

Speaking on the project, Pascal described the film as “an absolute labor of love for me.” She added, “I have known Madonna since we made ‘A League of Their Own’ together, and I can’t imagine anything more thrilling than collaborating with her and Diablo on bringing her true-life story to the big screen with Donna and our partners at Universal.”

As far as directing, this isn’t the “Vogue” songbird’s first time at the rodeo. She previously directed two movies, including 2008’s Filth and Wisdom and 2011’s W.E., which won a Golden Globe.

No production timeline or principle cast has been announced for the movie at this time. Even so, the pop star has been dropping clues all month long about her upcoming biopic, including a potential working title: Live to Tell, nodding to her 1986 song of the same name.
