Fatal single-engine plane crash on Monday in Ashland County

ASHLAND – The Ashland Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal single-engine plane crash that occurred on May 5 at 7:42 p.m. in the area of State Route 89 and Township Road 902 in Jackson Township, Ashland County.

The preliminary investigation revealed an Express 2000 FT, piloted by 72-year-old, Gary Wolfelt, of West Lafayette, Indiana, crashed into the woods. The Polk Jackson Perry Fire District confirmed that Mr. Wolfelt was the only individual onboard the aircraft.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Ashland County Sheriff's Office, the Polk Jackson Perry Fire District, the Ashland County Coroner’s Office, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The incident remains under investigation.
