The Richland County Sheriff’s Office would like to make the public aware of two scams that are presently occurring in Richland County.

The first, involves persons calling and identifying themselves as Richland County Sheriff’s Deputies while advising the person they call, they have an active warrant. The callers are attempting to pressure the call receiver into paying a fee to dismiss the warrant to avoid being arrested. To be clear, the Richland County Sheriff’s Office will never call a person directly and request payments of fines and/or warrants. If you are in doubt, contact our Office at 419-774-5881 for verification.

The second, was brought to our attention by the Richland County Auditor’s Office. This scam involves citizens receiving mailings stating that their account status has been stagnant for an extended period of time and unless verified by the account holder funds will be transferred to the State of Ohio per state law.

If you receive one of these mailers, please take the time to ensure the legitimacy of the request prior to taking any action. These steps may include, not providing personal identifying information over the phone or internet, contacting your account holders via verified contact methods or by personal contact at your financial institutions.

Unfortunately, these types of scams are becoming more frequent and complex. Please contact your local law enforcement if you suspect you have fallen victim to one of these scams.
