Almost 200 New York City kids go on a field trip to D.C. with NYPD officers to help strengthen community ties. Officers from the NYPD Commissioner’s Liaison Unit and the Community Affairs Bureau escorted 189 students from Harlem and Brooklyn neighborhoods on a trip to Washington, D.C.

In a statement, NYPD says the group visited the National Museum of African American History “to explore their culture and heritage.” Many of the elementary through high school aged children were reportedly excited about the trip when they left Harlem’s 28th Precinct Station before dawn.

Executive director of the youth advocacy organization The Community Initiatives of NY, Reverend Al Cohen says it’s important for law enforcement to show the community that they can rely on their support. “This is something that’s not regular or frequent,” Cohen says. “But this opportunity has definitely been exciting for the kids, and that’s why they’re here.”
