A Louisiana family’s golden retriever is being celebrated for protecting their two young children while they were lost in the woods for hours. One late afternoon earlier this week, four-year-old Cecilia Bourg and her sister Abigail, seven, wandered off into the woods by their family’s home near Folsom, Louisiana. The girls soon found themselves lost in the woods, fortunately, they had their family’s golden retriever Artemis with them.

When the girls’ parents Justin and Mary Bourg realized they were missing and weren’t able to find them in the immediate area, they called the St Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office. The sheriff coordinated a multi-agency search using ATV’s, drones, and helicopters and was assisted by dozens of volunteers on the ground. After four hours of searching, the girls and their pup were spotted deep in the woods. When Artemis heard searchers nearby, he started barking, allowing them to locate the girls. And as rescuers approached them, the dog growled at them, protecting his girls.

Mary later took to social media to thank everyone involved in the search and rescue and also to give praise to Artemis for protecting her daughters and aid in their being located. She says the girls were a little shaken up, but unharmed. “So grateful for our hero Artemis, our golden retriever,” she writes. “Artemis heard people coming and started barking, making it much easier to find them. He even growled at the police at first because he was protecting our babies.” The sheriff even shared a video of the touching moment the girls were reunited with their parents and thanked everyone involved in the effort.
