A 103-year-old World War II veteran in Alabama is awarded a handmade quilt to thank him for his sacrifice. It’s been nearly 81 years since Cecil Parker landed at Normandy. The U.S. Army veteran fought in all the major battles in Europe, earning two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star.

In recognition of his sacrifice, the Quilts of Valor Foundation awarded Parker a handmade, red, white, and blue quilt, quilted especially for him by members of the Birmingham Quilting Guild. Since it began in 2003, Quilts of Valor has awarded over 300-thousand quilts to service members or veterans who’ve been touched by war as a thank you for their service and sacrifice.

This past Saturday, Parker was grinning from ear to ear as the quilt was draped over his shoulders while he was surrounded by his family. The centenarian hero will wear the quilt proudly as a symbol of the sacrifices he’s made for our country.
