One of the co-founders of Airbnb donates $25-million to a nonprofit working to clean the world’s oceans of plastic debris. Last week, Joe Gebbia, the cofounder of Airbnb and Samara, announced that he has donated $25-million to The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit working to rid the oceans of plastic.

We’ve told you before about Boyan Slat, the Dutch inventor who founded The Ocean Cleanup as a teen. In 2018, they set their sights on cleaning up the gyre of trash in the central North Pacific Ocean known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and have since collected more than 400-thousand pounds of trash there. Gebbia’s donation will allow The Ocean Cleanup to improve their technology and expand their efforts to other oceans and rivers.

Slat says that the support The Ocean Project has received from Gebbie will have a positive impact on their projects all over the world. “Thanks, in part, to his generous assistance, we are able to scale up our work in oceans and rivers, helping us reach our goal of ridding the world’s oceans of plastic,” he says. “On behalf of the world’s largest ecosystem, we are immensely grateful for the support.”
