Since 2005, Broad Street Ministry has been feeding those in need out of the historic Wylie-Chambers Presbyterian Church building in Philadelphia with what they call radical hospitality. Most of the year, chefs like culinary director Donald Williams cook and serve up meals to hundreds of Philly’s homeless residents five days a week. But with the ministry’s Kitchen Takeover series, their guests are treated to meals created by chefs from popular restaurants across the city.
This week the kitchen was taken over by chef Matt Budenstein from the Fishtown neighborhood sandwich shop Liberty Kitchen. When he saw the church-turned-foodhall, it nearly brought him to tears. "They make it [special] for the guests because they deserve it," Budenstein says. "They deserve to, you know, have a restaurant experience."
For dining guests like Raymond Collins, who grew up in North Philadelphia and never thought he’d end up homeless, meals from the ministry give him some much-needed relief. "This is one thing that I don't have to worry about,” Collins says. “I know that I can get a meal."
