Back in 2006, Ashley Payne graduated at the top of her class from Faith Christian Academy High School, but during her freshman year of college, she was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism and dropped out to prioritize her health. Fast forward 17 years and now the Lakeland, Florida, wife and mother of seven is finally graduating from college and once again, she’s earned the valedictorian spot.

This past Friday, Payne was honored as valedictorian during the graduation ceremony for Keiser University’s Lakeland Campus. She credits her family for helping her make it through the university’s nursing program, remembering her late mother, and finding motivation in a note given to her by her daughter, Lorelai, that reads: "Aim for the moon, and if you miss, you may hit a star."

As Payne continues her education, seeking her Master’s degree in nursing, she hopes that she can be an inspiration for her children and has this message for them or anyone who has a dream: "There is nothing holding you back. It might feel like it, but it's perceived boundaries. Just surround yourself with people who care, that love you, that nourish your achievements, and you can do anything you want."
