Freaky footage captured a swarm of dragonflies turning a Rhode Island beach into a scene straight out of a movie. The insects literally took over everywhere, buzzing under umbrellas, around chairs, and past beachgoers.
“I was enjoying a nice day until we endured a dragonfly apocalypse,” witness Stephanie Martin told WCVB-TV. “Some people fled for cover, while others laughed or swatted the bugs with shovels and pails.” Another witness, Richard Sontag, called it an “invasion.”
Dragonfly swarms can form when the insects are breeding, chasing prey, or upset by the weather or human activity. They can number into the billions. Despite their dramatic appearance, dragonflies pose no danger to humans.
